Featured Instigator: Will Lukang
This month we are featuring Instigator Will Lukang, an Executive Director for a financial company and an Independent Coach with the John Maxwell Team. Will was part of the original group of Lead Change Group members.
Will graduated from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines with a BS in Commerce/Major in Accounting. In addition, he has an MBA in Information and Decision Technology Management from IONA College as well as a Master of Arts in Strategic Communication and Leadership from Seton Hall University.
Will has over 26 years of experience in the Information Technology field. At one point in his career, he reports the strangest question he was asked in a job interview was, "Why do you want my job?" when he had not applied for the interviewer's position.
The best moment in his career occurred in 2008, when he recommended a direct report for a job within their company. The job would make the direct report Will's peer. He remarks, "Learning to be unselfish and raise people around you is a challenge. It takes time for people to be comfortable in their skin and serve others."
A leadership lesson Will learned from his first job was "always give credit to your people." The best advice he's ever been given came from his father: treat everyone the same regardless of their social status.
On the topic of the most important qualities in leaders, Will believes that selflessness, honesty, and decisiveness are critical.
Will thinks schools should teach students to think and make decisions. He says, "We need to empower them to see solutions and make the right decisions."
When asked about books he has found most helpful for his professional life, Will replied, "Think and Grow Rich and The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership were the most helpful books in my professional life."
When asked the most creative solution he's ever seen to a problem in life or work, Will replied, "There are many ways of solving a problem. Learning to step back and see through different lenses enables you to see various opportunities."
If he had to hashtag his life, Will would select #IWillAim, signifying "I will aim to do the best I can to change the things around me to help make things better."
One of Will's favorite quotes is "be the change you wish to see in the world" by Mahatma Gandhi.
When asked "if money were no object, what would you do all day?" he responded, "serving and developing leaders all day. Also, setting up programs for less fortunate children to enable to change their future."
Of his involvement in Lead Change, Will says, "I connected with Mike Henry on twitter and before you know it I was on a conference call with a group of people and co-authored a book with them. I'm so honored to be part of this community."
We are so glad you made that connection with Mike Henry, Will. You're a valued part of our community!
