What we compare

No salary benchmarking product is verified yet. These are the capabilities each one will be checked against, in the vendor’s own documentation.

Capabilities in the comparison

  • Market pay data

Provides base pay, bonus and equity data for benchmark jobs at several percentiles.

  • Job matching and leveling

Matches your roles to benchmark jobs by content and level.

  • Market cuts

Filters data by industry, location, company size and funding stage.

  • Sample transparency

Shows the number of organizations and incumbents behind each figure.

  • Data freshness and aging

Shows effective dates and ages data to a common date.

  • Geographic differentials

Adjusts pay by country, state or metro area for multi-location and remote hiring.

  • Source blending

Combines several surveys or datasets into one weighted market rate.

  • Pay range building

Turns market rates into pay ranges and structures.

  • HRIS and planning integration

Exports ranges and market rates to HRIS, compensation and recruiting systems.

How to choose salary benchmarking software

Choose on whether the data actually describes the jobs, places and companies you compete with for people. A large database is not useful if your roles do not match its benchmark jobs or the sample for your market is thin.

Bring a list of your hardest-to-price roles and locations to the demo, and ask the vendor to price them live, showing the sample behind each number.

  1. Data source and collection method

Employer-reported survey data, payroll-connected data and self-reported data behave differently and suit different decisions.

  2. Freshness

Pay moves between survey editions, and stale data understates the market for in-demand roles.

  3. Job matching

A benchmark is only valid if the matched job has similar content and level, not just a similar title.

  4. Market cuts and sample size

Filtering by industry, location, size and funding stage can leave a sample too small to trust.

  5. Pay elements covered

Base salary alone misses bonuses, commissions and equity, which can dominate pay for some roles.

  6. Geographic coverage

Hiring remotely or in several locations needs location-specific data or a clear geographic differential method.

Requirements by company size

  • Small businesses

    • Self-serve pricing for common roles
    • Location-specific data for where you hire
    • Simple range building for job postings

    Watch out for

    • Thin samples for your industry or location
    • Annual contracts priced for large compensation teams
    • Free salary sites with no clear source
  • Mid-sized companies

    • Leveled job matching across functions
    • Blending of more than one data source
    • Range export to HRIS and recruiting systems

    Watch out for

    • Data refreshed only once per survey edition
    • Equity data missing for roles that receive it
    • Contribution terms you have not reviewed
  • Enterprises

    • Multi-country coverage with consistent leveling
    • Custom peer groups
    • Integration with compensation planning and pay equity tools

    Watch out for

    • Several survey subscriptions nobody reconciles
    • Peer groups too narrow to report safely
    • Per-survey fees that add up across countries

Red flags

  • The vendor will not say where the data comes from
  • Sample sizes are hidden behind each figure
  • Jobs are matched by title only
  • No effective date on the data
  • Your contributed data terms are unclear

How we research

Ranked by the LeadChange Score, computed only from verified facts: capability coverage (30%), pricing and value (20%), integrations and API (15%), security (15%), fit and support (10%) and data confidence (10%), times a category fit. Products with too few verified facts are not scored yet and come last. Payment never changes a score or a position.

Read the full methodology

  • Facts, not impressions

Every input is a fact verified against vendors’ official documentation, with the date we last checked it.

  • Missing data is never assumed

Unverified items are left out of the score and lower its coverage; below 60% coverage a product is not scored yet.

  • Independent of revenue

Rankings never depend on whether a vendor pays us.
