Frequently asked questions

What is talent management software?

Talent management software helps companies develop and retain existing employees. It typically combines performance reviews, goals, compensation planning, learning, career paths and succession planning in one platform, so that pay, promotion and development decisions use consistent, documented employee data rather than memory and spreadsheets.

What is the difference between talent management and talent acquisition software?

Talent acquisition software covers hiring, from attracting candidates to making offers. Talent management covers what happens after hire: performance, development, compensation and succession. Some vendors sell both in one suite, but the buyers, workflows and success measures are different, so evaluate each on its own criteria.

How much does talent management software cost?

Most vendors charge per employee per month, scaled by modules such as performance, learning, compensation and succession. Larger suites are quoted individually. Ask for an itemized quote including implementation, content licenses and integrations, and check how renewal increases are capped.

Do I need talent management software for a small business?

Usually not a dedicated platform. If you have a handful of employees, a review template and the performance feature in your HR platform are enough. It becomes worthwhile when you have several managers, need consistent ratings across teams, or want to link development and succession to data.

Talent management vs HCM: what is the difference?

HCM is a broader suite covering core HR, payroll, time and often talent functions. Talent management software focuses on performance, learning and succession. If you already have an HR system, a talent platform that integrates with it may fit. If you are replacing everything, an HCM suite may be simpler.

How long should I keep performance review records?

The EEOC states that employers keep all personnel or employment records for one year, and for terminated employees one year from termination. When a charge is filed, relevant records must be kept until final disposition. Your platform should retain reviews accessibly after employment ends. Check state law, which may differ.

Is talent management software worth it?

It is worth it when inconsistent reviews, lost feedback or unexplained pay decisions create risk or turnover. Its value depends on manager adoption. Define the problem and a measure, such as review completion or internal promotion rate, before purchase so you can judge results against a baseline.
