Video Interviewing Software

Video interview software lets employers interview candidates remotely, either live on a video call or through one-way (asynchronous) interviews where candidates record answers to preset questions. Hiring teams review recordings, score responses on structured rubrics, share clips and keep interviews in the applicant record. Some products add transcription or AI analysis.

Research in progress

We are verifying video interviewing products against vendors’ official documentation and pricing pages. A ranking by LeadChange Score appears here once at least 3 products pass our research checks. Until then, this page explains what the software does, what we evaluate and how to choose.

What we evaluate

  • Live video interviews

Hosts live interviews with recording options.

  • One-way interviews

Lets candidates record answers to set questions.

  • Structured scoring

Scores answers with rubrics and rating scales.

  • AI analysis and audit

Discloses what AI analyzes and supports bias audits.

  • Accessibility and accommodations

Supports captions, extra time and alternatives.

  • Mobile and low bandwidth

Works on phones and weak connections.

  • Consent and retention

Captures consent and sets retention and deletion.

  • Sharing and security

Shares recordings securely with access controls.

  • ATS integration

Connects to the applicant tracking system.

  • Reporting and export

Reports interview volumes and completion and exports recordings and scores.

Who needs video interviewing software?

You need video interview software when you screen many candidates before a live conversation, hire across locations or time zones, or want every reviewer to see the same structured answers. One-way interviews suit high-volume screening. Live video with recording and shared scoring suits distributed hiring panels.

If you interview a handful of candidates a quarter, a general video call tool and a scorecard template are usually enough.

Compliance should shape the purchase. Illinois requires notice, an explanation and consent before AI analyzes applicant-submitted video, and NYC requires bias audits for automated employment decision tools. The EEOC also warns that automated tools can screen out people with disabilities.

How to choose video interviewing software

Decide first whether you need live interviews, one-way interviews or both, then evaluate how reviewers score responses. The core question is whether the tool makes evaluation more consistent without adding legal exposure.

Complete an interview as a candidate on a phone with a mediocre connection. That test reveals more than the feature list.

  1. Live, one-way and hybrid formats

Different stages need different formats, and separate tools split the record.

  2. Structured scoring and rubrics

Consistent criteria reduce reviewer noise and make decisions easier to defend.

  3. AI analysis: what is analyzed and how it is audited

Illinois requires notice, explanation and consent before AI evaluates applicant video, and NYC requires bias audits for covered automated tools.

  4. Accessibility and accommodations

The EEOC and DOJ warn that tools can screen out people with disabilities and advise a reasonable accommodation process.

  5. Candidate experience on mobile and low bandwidth

Failed uploads and unclear instructions lose candidates.

  6. Consent, retention and deletion controls

Recordings are sensitive records and candidates may request deletion.

Requirements by company size

  • Small businesses

    • Simple one-way and live interview links

    • Paying for AI scoring you do not plan to use
    • Hiring managers recording without consent screens
    • Limited export of recordings
  • Mid-sized companies

    • Structured rubrics and shared review
    • ATS integration
    • Configurable consent and retention

    Watch out for

    • AI features enabled without an audit trail
    • Recording storage fees
    • Weak accessibility accommodations
  • Enterprises

    • Multi-jurisdiction consent and notice controls
    • Single sign-on, role-based access and audit logs
    • Bias audit documentation for any automated scoring

  • Recordings are shareable by public link without expiry

Frequently asked questions

What is video interview software?

Video interview software lets employers interview candidates remotely, either live or through one-way interviews where candidates record answers. Teams review recordings and score them against rubrics, usually inside an applicant tracking system. Products differ mainly in format support, scoring tools, accessibility features and whether they offer AI analysis, so check each against your hiring process.

What is the difference between one-way and live video interviews?

In a one-way interview the candidate records answers to preset questions on their own time. A live interview happens in real time with an interviewer. One-way suits early screening at volume; live suits later, more conversational stages. Many platforms support both formats, but confirm that both land in the same candidate record before you buy.

Is AI analysis of video interviews legal?

It depends on where you hire. Illinois requires notice, an explanation and consent before AI analyzes applicant video, and NYC requires bias audits and notices for covered automated tools. Consult counsel for your states, and ask vendors for audit documentation.

Do I need video interview software for small business?

Probably not at low volume. A general video call tool and a shared scorecard handle a few interviews. Consider dedicated software when you screen many candidates per role or need reviewers in different locations to score the same answers. Check whether your ATS already includes basic video features, which can remove the need for a separate license.

How much does video interview software cost?

Pricing is typically per user per month, per interview or credit, or bundled in an ATS plan. Totals vary with seats, volume, storage and AI modules. Ask about storage, transcription and AI add-ons before signing. Request a quote that states storage limits, retention period and which modules are included in the base price.

Can video interviews discriminate against candidates with disabilities?

Yes, if tools screen out qualified people or offer no accommodation path. The EEOC and DOJ advise employers to have a process for reasonable accommodations and to consider how tools affect different disabilities, including tools from vendors. Ask any vendor to show how a candidate requests captions, extra time or another format, and who receives that request.

Is video interview software worth it?

It is worth it when screening volume is high or interviewers are spread across locations. Measure completion rate, reviewer time per candidate and scoring consistency in a pilot. If recruiters still rewatch every recording, the tool is not saving time.

How we research

Products are ranked by the LeadChange Score, computed only from verified facts: capability coverage (30%), pricing transparency and value (20%), integrations and API (15%), security and compliance (15%), fit and support (10%) and data confidence (10%), times a category fit that lowers products built for another job. Payment never changes a score or a position.

  • Facts, not impressions

Every input is a fact verified against vendors’ official documentation, with the date we last checked it.

  • Missing data scores zero

We never assume a feature; unverified items lower the confidence label.
