Internal Mobility Software
Internal mobility software helps employees find and move into new roles, projects and development opportunities inside their own company. It shows internal job openings, matches employees to roles by skills and interests, supports career pathing and gigs, and reports on promotion and transfer rates. It usually connects to an HRIS and an applicant tracking system.

Research in progress
We are verifying internal mobility products against vendors’ official documentation and pricing pages. A ranking by LeadChange Score appears here once at least 3 products pass our research checks. Until then, this page explains what the software does, what we evaluate and how to choose.

Shows possible career paths and the skills needed.
Gigs and projects
Offers short-term projects and stretch assignments.
Mentoring links
Connects employees to mentors or development resources.
ATS and HRIS integration
Syncs with the applicant tracking and HR systems.
Explainable recommendations
Shows why a role or candidate is recommended.
Privacy and visibility controls

Who needs internal mobility software?
You need internal mobility software when open roles are filled externally while qualified employees leave to find growth, when internal postings are scattered across email and the intranet, or when managers block transfers. It also helps when you want to see skills across the workforce.
If you have few roles and promotions happen through direct conversations, a posting process in your ATS may be enough.
Fairness applies to internal moves as well. The EEOC and DOJ warn that automated tools can screen workers out of consideration for a job or promotion, and advise a reasonable accommodation process. Review any matching or recommendation logic for the same risk.
How to choose internal mobility software
Choose on whether employees will use it and managers will release them. A marketplace with attractive matching but no process for manager approval and backfill stalls at the first transfer.
Walk through a full internal move in the demo, from posting to transfer record in the HRIS.
Skills data and matching
Matches are only as good as the skills data behind them.
Internal job posting and application workflow
Employees need a clear route to apply, and managers need a clear route to respond.
Manager approval and release process
Blocked transfers kill programs.
Career pathing and development links
Employees stay when they see a route forward.
Gigs, projects and mentoring
Short-term moves provide growth without a full transfer.
HRIS and ATS integration
Moves must flow to the system of record without re-keying.

Frequently asked questions
What is internal mobility software?
Internal mobility software helps employees find and move into new roles, projects and development opportunities within their company. It shows internal openings, matches people by skills, supports career paths and reports on moves. Most products combine a skills profile, an internal job board, matching and manager workflows, and connect to the HRIS for the actual move.
What is an internal talent marketplace?
An internal talent marketplace is a platform that matches employees to jobs, gigs, projects and mentors inside the company, usually using skills data. It is a major use case for internal mobility software. Marketplaces typically also support short projects and mentoring, so employees can build experience without changing roles formally.
Do I need internal mobility software?
You need it when qualified employees leave for growth, internal postings are scattered, or managers block transfers. If you have few roles and promotions are handled directly, ATS internal postings may be enough. A quick test is to review your last year of hires and count how many roles current employees could have filled.
How much does internal mobility software cost?
Pricing is typically per employee per month, a module in a talent suite, a tiered band by company size, or a platform fee plus services. Ask about skills data setup, integrations and separate fees for gigs or mentoring. Request a quote that separates the license from skills data setup, since cleanup work can be a large share of cost.
Internal mobility software vs. succession planning software: what is the difference?
Succession planning focuses on filling critical roles through leadership-led successor slates. Internal mobility focuses on employee-driven moves across all levels. They overlap, and some suites combine both. Many vendors sell both, so decide whether your priority is leadership continuity or broad employee growth before comparing products.
Can AI skills matching create legal risk?
It can. The EEOC and DOJ warn that tools can screen workers out of consideration for a job or promotion, and advise employers to have a reasonable accommodation process. Ask vendors to explain matching logic and audit outcomes. Ask for any available bias audit results and confirm you can switch recommendations off while keeping postings and applications.
Is internal mobility software worth it?
It is worth it when internal fill rate is low and you hire externally for roles employees could do. Track internal fills and retention after a pilot. Without manager buy-in, software alone will not raise either. A fair pilot compares internal fill rate and retention for participating teams against comparable teams that did not use the tool.
How we research
Products are ranked by the LeadChange Score, computed only from verified facts: capability coverage (30%), pricing transparency and value (20%), integrations and API (15%), security and compliance (15%), fit and support (10%) and data confidence (10%), times a category fit that lowers products built for another job. Payment never changes a score or a position.
Facts, not impressions
Every input is a fact verified against vendors’ official documentation, with the date we last checked it.
Missing data scores zero
We never assume a feature; unverified items lower the confidence label.
Independent of revenue
Rankings are computed before and without knowing which vendors pay us.
