What we compare
No leave of absence management product is verified yet. These are the capabilities each one will be checked against, in the vendor’s own documentation.
Capabilities in the comparison
Eligibility determination
Checks employer coverage and employee eligibility for federal, state and company leave from service, hours and worksite data.
Leave law coverage
Applies federal, state and local leave laws and runs overlapping entitlements together.
Notices and deadlines
Generates eligibility, rights and designation notices and tracks their due and sent dates.
Intermittent leave tracking
Records partial-day and reduced-schedule absences against the remaining entitlement.
Accommodation case management
Documents the interactive process for disability and pregnancy-related accommodation requests.
Certification tracking
Requests, tracks and securely stores medical certifications and supporting documents.
Employee and manager self-service
Lets employees request leave and see status, and gives managers absence dates without medical details.
Payroll, HRIS and carrier integration
Syncs hours, worksites, pay and disability claim data with other systems.
Audit trail and reporting
Keeps a dated history of each case and reports open cases, deadlines and outcomes.
How to choose leave of absence & accommodations software
Leave tools differ most in the depth of their rules engine and in who does the work. Some give your HR team software to run leave in-house; others pair the software with a vendor team that handles cases for you. Decide which model you want before you compare features.
Bring real, anonymized cases to the demo: an intermittent leave, an employee in a state with its own paid leave program and an accommodation request. Ask the vendor to walk each one from request to return to work.
Federal, state and local leave law coverage
FMLA is only one layer. State family and medical leave laws, paid leave programs and local rules can apply to the same absence, and the tool has to run them together.
Eligibility determination
FMLA eligibility depends on employer coverage, length of service, hours worked and the number of employees near the worksite, which is hard to calculate by hand.
Notices and deadlines
The Department of Labor sets deadlines for eligibility, rights and responsibilities, and designation notices, and late or missing notices are a common gap.
Intermittent leave tracking
Intermittent and reduced-schedule leave is taken in small increments that are easy to miscount, especially for employees with variable schedules.
Accommodation workflow
ADA and pregnancy-related accommodation requests need a documented interactive process, separate from leave entitlements.
Certification and document handling
Medical certifications and supporting documents are sensitive and have their own due dates and follow-ups.
Requirements by company size
Small businesses
- Guided FMLA eligibility and notice templates
- Simple intermittent leave tracking
- Clear separation of medical documents
Watch out for
- Buying an enterprise rules engine for a handful of cases a year
- Tools that only track PTO balances and call it leave management
- Minimum fees that assume a larger headcount
Mid-sized companies
- Multi-state leave law coverage
- Payroll and HRIS sync for hours and worksites
- Accommodation case management
Watch out for
- State paid leave programs missing from the base plan
- Manual entry of hours worked for eligibility
- No clear owner when the tool and the vendor team disagree
Enterprises
- Configurable rules for many states, entities and union agreements
- Disability carrier and payroll integrations
- Full audit history and reporting by location
Watch out for
- Rules updates that lag behind effective dates
- Outsourced case handling with weak service levels
- Separate contracts for leave, accommodations and disability
Red flags
- The vendor cannot list which state and local leave laws it covers
- Eligibility results that cannot be explained or overridden with a reason
- No record of when each notice was sent
- Medical documents visible to managers or stored in the general personnel file
- Marketing implies the product guarantees compliance or replaces legal advice
How we research
Ranked by the LeadChange Score, computed only from verified facts: capability coverage (30%), pricing and value (20%), integrations and API (15%), security (15%), fit and support (10%) and data confidence (10%), times a category fit. Products with too few verified facts are not scored yet and come last. Payment never changes a score or a position.
Facts, not impressions
Every input is a fact verified against vendors’ official documentation, with the date we last checked it.
Missing data is never assumed
Unverified items are left out of the score and lower its coverage; below 60% coverage a product is not scored yet.
Independent of revenue
Rankings never depend on whether a vendor pays us.
