Offboarding Software

Offboarding Software for Startups

Startups use many cloud applications and change them often, so access removal is the main concern.

Research in progress

We have not yet verified which offboarding platforms serve this segment. We rank offboarding software for startups once at least 3 products have that evidence; until then, this page sets out what matters and what we evaluate.

What we evaluate

  • Offboarding checklists

Assigns exit tasks to HR, IT, managers and employees by role.

  • Access deprovisioning

Removes system access or triggers removal through connected tools.

  • Asset recovery

Tracks return of equipment and company property.

  • Benefits continuation

Triggers COBRA and benefit end-date steps.

  • Final pay rules

Applies state rules on final pay timing and contents.

  • Exit interview

Collects exit interview responses through surveys or scheduled conversations.

  • Record retention

Retains exit records for set periods.

  • HRIS and payroll integration

Syncs terminations to HR and payroll.

  • Audit trail

Logs completed tasks and who did them.

  • Turnover reporting

Reports exits by reason, team and tenure.

What matters for startups

  1. App inventory and deprovisioning

    Accounts sprawl across tools.

  2. Identity provider integration

    Central deprovisioning reduces missed accounts.

  3. Equipment return for remote staff

Laptops are often shipped across states.

  4. Equity and agreement tracking

Separation terms need a documented process.

How to choose offboarding software

6 criteria · 5 red flags

Map what happens today from resignation or termination to the last day and beyond: who is told, which systems are changed, which notices go out. The failure points show which features matter.

Prioritize access removal and record keeping over exit survey design. Those are where risk concentrates.

  1. Access deprovisioning

Delayed removal of system access is the main security exposure.

  2. Task automation across teams

Offboarding spans HR, IT, payroll, benefits and managers.

  3. Benefits continuation tracking

Employers and plans have federal notice deadlines. The DOL states an employer must notify the plan administrator within 30 days and the plan must provide an election notice within 14 days.

  4. Final pay and state rules

Final paycheck timing varies by state, and the DOL federal pages do not set one rule for all.

  5. Record retention

Retention rules differ by record type. Form I-9s must be kept for 3 years after hire or 1 year after termination, whichever is later, and payroll records at least three years.

  6. Equipment and asset recovery

Lost devices carry cost and data risk.

Red flags

  • Deprovisioning is only a reminder email
  • No audit trail of who completed which task and when
  • State differences are ignored in final pay or notice workflows
  • Retention cannot be configured by document type
  • Involuntary terminations use the same workflow as resignations, with no confidentiality controls
