Workplace Safety (EHS)

Workplace Safety (EHS) Software for Manufacturing

Manufacturing combines machinery, chemicals and shift work, so hazard controls and training records are as important as incident logs.

Research in progress

We have not yet verified which workplace safety (EHS) platforms serve this segment. We rank workplace safety (EHS) software for manufacturing once at least 3 products have that evidence; until then, this page sets out what matters and what we evaluate.

What we evaluate

  • OSHA recordkeeping forms

Produces OSHA Forms 300, 300A and 301 from incident data.

  • Electronic submission

Supports submission of injury data to OSHA's system.

  • Mobile incident capture

Lets workers or supervisors log incidents on phones.

  • Severe injury reporting prompts

Prompts for reportable severe injuries within required times.

  • Corrective action tracking

Assigns and tracks corrective and preventive actions.

  • Inspections and audits

Runs inspection checklists, audits and observations and records findings.

  • Privacy handling

Protects employee names in records as required.

  • Analytics and benchmarks

Calculates incident rates such as TRIR and compares them with benchmarks.

  • Integrations

Connects to HR, workers' compensation and training systems.

  • Safety training

Tracks safety training completion and certifications by employee.

What matters for manufacturing

  1. Corrective action with verification

Machine and process hazards need proof that fixes worked.

  2. Chemical and safety data sheet tracking

    Hazardous materials need documented inventories.

  3. Shift-level reporting

Incidents often cluster by line or shift.

  4. Training and permit records

Equipment authorization depends on current training.

How to choose workplace safety (EHS) software

Safety software earns its value when it changes what happens after an incident or inspection. Choose for field usability and closed-loop action tracking before dashboards.

Ask to see the workflow from an injury on a job site to a completed OSHA record.

  1. OSHA recordkeeping forms

Many employers with more than 10 employees must keep records on Forms 300, 300A and 301 or equivalents, and keep them for five years after the year they cover.

  2. Electronic submission support

Establishments meeting size and industry criteria must submit data to OSHA's Injury Tracking Application, by March 2 for the prior year's data.

  3. Mobile incident capture

Reports made on a phone at the scene are more complete and more timely than forms filled in later.

  4. Severe injury reporting prompts

Fatalities must be reported within 8 hours, and hospitalizations, amputations and eye loss within 24 hours.

  5. Corrective and preventive action tracking

Recording incidents without closing actions does not reduce risk.

  6. Inspections, audits and observations

Proactive checks find hazards before they cause injuries.

Requirements by company size

  • Small businesses

    • Simple mobile incident reporting
    • OSHA forms generated from incidents
    • Checklists for inspections
    • Action tracking with reminders

    Watch out for

    • Paying for modules you do not use
    • Not knowing whether your industry is exempt from recordkeeping
    • No guidance on reportable events
  • Mid-sized companies

    • Multi-site configuration and permissions
    • Electronic submission support
    • Inspection and audit workflows
    • HRIS and workers' compensation integration

    Watch out for

    • Sites using different incident definitions
    • Dashboards without data quality checks
    • Training links that do not sync
  • Enterprises

    • Global configuration and multiple languages
    • Advanced analytics and API access
    • Contractor and visitor incident capture
    • Management of change and risk assessment modules

    Watch out for

    • Data governance across jurisdictions
    • Long rollouts that stall at the site level
    • Heavy customization that complicates upgrades

Red flags

  • The vendor cannot show OSHA 300, 300A and 301 generated from the same incident.
  • Mobile reporting requires a constant connection.
  • Corrective actions can be closed without evidence or approval.
  • Compliance is described as automatic rather than tied to specific recordkeeping requirements.
  • Raw data cannot be exported.
