Research in progress

We have not yet verified which employee survey platforms serve this segment. We rank free employee survey software once at least 3 products have that evidence; until then, this page sets out what matters and what we evaluate.

What we evaluate

  • Survey builder

Creates surveys with multiple question types and branching logic.

  • Question library

Provides a library of tested questions and survey templates for common topics.

  • Anonymity and confidentiality

Hides small groups and protects respondent identity.

  • Distribution to all employees

Delivers by email, link, mobile or kiosk.

  • HRIS integration and org sync

Maps responses to org data from the HR system.

  • Analytics and driver analysis

Shows results by segment and the drivers behind scores.

Analyzes comments and routes serious ones to HR.

  • Manager reports and actions

Delivers team results and tracks follow-up actions.

  • Benchmarks

Compares scores to external or historical data.

  • Data export and retention

What matters in free employee survey software

  1. Respondent limits that cover your headcount

Caps below your employee count make results incomplete.

  2. Anonymity settings on the free tier

Some features are reserved for paid plans.

  3. Data export

You should be able to keep results if you move tools.

  4. Branding and distribution limits

Free plans can add vendor branding or limit channels.

How to choose employee survey software

The test of a survey platform is whether it produces action, not charts. Choose for trustworthy anonymity, manager-ready results and a way to track follow-up, since employees stop responding when nothing changes.

Run a pilot with one department: build a short survey, collect responses and see what a manager of a small team can and cannot see.

  1. Anonymity and confidentiality rules

Employees answer honestly only if they believe responses cannot be traced, and small groups can identify individuals even in aggregate.

  2. Survey design and question library

Poor questions produce poor data, and tested items save time.

  3. Distribution to every employee

Frontline and deskless staff may lack company email, which skews results.

  4. Analytics and driver analysis

Leaders need to know which issues are linked to outcomes such as turnover, not only scores.

  5. Comment analysis and escalation

Free-text comments may report harassment or safety issues, and an employer that knew or should have known may be liable if it does not respond.

  6. Manager reports and action planning

Results only change anything if managers get them and commit to steps.

Requirements by company size

  • Small businesses

    • Ready-made pulse and engagement templates
    • Anonymity that still works in small groups
    • Simple results without an analyst

    Watch out for

    • Minimum group sizes that hide most of your results
    • Annual contracts priced for larger headcount
    • Features such as predictive analytics you will not use
  • Mid-sized companies

    • HRIS sync and breakdowns by department and location
    • Manager reports with action planning
    • Multiple survey types in one platform

    Watch out for

    • Per-employee pricing across all survey types
    • Reports that never reach managers
    • Survey fatigue from overlapping pulses
  • Enterprises

    • Multi-language and non-email distribution
    • Role-based access and data privacy controls
    • Advanced analytics, benchmarks and API access

    Watch out for

    • Complex implementations with services fees
    • Regional data protection requirements
    • Dependence on vendor consultants to interpret results

Red flags

  • Administrators can see who said what, but the product claims anonymity
  • No minimum group size for reports
  • Comments displayed to managers with no screening for sensitive content
  • Surveys can only be sent by corporate email
  • No full export of raw results and history
